AkzoNobel, the Dutch multinational paints and coatings company, has announced plans to close two manufacturing facilities in Europe as part of its ongoing industrial transformation program. The sites in Wapenveld, the Netherlands, and Machelen, Belgium, are slated for closure, with production to be consolidated at other regional locations.

This move follows the company’s earlier announcements in 2024 regarding the closure of three manufacturing sites in Groot-Ammers (Netherlands), Cork (Ireland), and Lusaka (Zambia). These closures are integral to AkzoNobel’s multi-year strategy aimed at optimizing its industrial footprint, enhancing competitiveness, and driving sustainable growth.

The industrial transformation program focuses on streamlining operations by concentrating production in larger, more efficient “anchor” sites. This approach is designed to reduce complexity, lower operating costs, and facilitate future innovations. Recent investments include equipment and process upgrades at the company’s aerospace coatings site in Pamiers, France, and the establishment of new research laboratories in Sassenheim, the Netherlands.

In addition to the site closures, AkzoNobel has been implementing a broader restructuring plan to address challenges such as a post-COVID economic slowdown, rising raw material costs, and customer destocking. The company plans to cut approximately 2,200 jobs globally by the end of 2025, with a significant portion of the reductions occurring in Europe.

As part of its commitment to industrial excellence, AkzoNobel is also investing €22 million to transform its Montataire site in France into a flagship facility for decorative paint production. This investment is expected to modernize operations, enhance competitiveness, and support sustainable growth in the region.

The company has initiated consultation processes with employees and local social partners regarding the planned closures and restructuring efforts. These discussions are aimed at ensuring a smooth transition and addressing the concerns of affected stakeholders.

AkzoNobel’s strategic initiatives underscore its commitment to adapting to changing market conditions and positioning itself for long-term success in the global paints and coatings industry.
